We are an odd group, humanity. We love some kinds of different and seem to dislike others. Celebrities are absolutely different, and we can’t seem to get enough of them. But people of different faith, creed, or color aren’t always high on our list of favorites. Because of this, those who are different are often hesitant to embrace their differentness. And yet, if we are to reclaim balance in our world, we must have the space to be who we are, because we need the different.
The reason this is so important is that homogeneity, by definition, is out of balance. We are a planet of duality: male/female, open/close, day/night, yin/yang, etc. Ancient Oriental philosophy tells us that the whole of anything can be seen in these dualities, and for the whole to be healthy and vibrant, there must be an equal movement of energy between these dualities; both must be present and vital. If we have all of one part and little of the other, our world will not be healthy.
Right now, our global cultures are pretty universally patriarchies. The masculine principle dominates. Most government officials are males. Commerce is the bastion of males. The end result of this imbalance is a world on the edge of disaster. We need more of what’s different in all ways. Truly, it is only through our diversity that the whole of our people and planet can manifest perfection. And survive. Here’s to being different. Bring it on!
