Slavery in the Patriarchy

We have reached a stage in the history of humanity where most civilized nations find slavery reprehensible.  Certainly, the common wisdom is that every person should have the right to freedom and self-determination.  And yet, somehow in a patriarchal world, that doesn’t seem to hold true for women.

There are many places around the globe where women are still considered “less than” men.  They are possessions, just as slaves are considered possessions.  They are beaten and sexually abused at the pleasure of the male.  Infant females are killed because they are less valuable than males.  Right now, this minute, in the more “uncivilized” areas, atrocities like this still occur on our planet.

And even in “developed” countries, women do not have the same rights as men.  No one tells a man what he can or cannot do with his body, yet women do not legally have that same right.  No woman can call herself free if she does not control her own body.  And until that happens, she can be considered no better than a slave to the patriarchy.

Here’s to Lincoln, the Great Emancipator.  Would his idea of democracy embrace what it takes to reclaim balance in our world?
