An unfortunate side effect of a patriarchy is the tendency to think of everything as being for humanity. Many people take the Bible quite literally when it says that all of nature was created for man. The end result is that we treat nature like a commodity here solely for our use. If we look around, we can see that this strategy isn’t working too well for our planet.
A more balanced culture would view nature much as Mary Daly suggests, that we are with nature and our planet, just as they are with us. We would honor and respect our planet like a sister and treat her accordingly. A balanced culture would make nature’s rights just as important as human rights, which would lead to a healthier planet, vibrant nature, and happier people.
After all, nature knows all about balance, it’s humanity that has forgotten. We continually ignore the fact that a patriarchy, by definition, is out of balance. For the good of our planet, her people, and the millions of species still clinging to life here, I hope we can reclaim balance soon.
